One of the only problems with seeing shows on Broadway as a college student is how expensive some tickets cost. Fortunately, there are many options that many people do not know about! For example, TKTS is a ticket booth that offers tickets to Broadway plays and musicals for up to 50% off the original price! There are three location options for TKTS:
1. The Times Square Booth sells day-of-performance discount tickets. At Window #1 you may purchase full-price tickets to future performances for all shows and same-day full-price tickets to shows that aren't being discounted.
2. The Downtown Brooklyn Booth sells tickets to evening performances on the day of the performance and matinee tickets the day before as well as tickets to Brooklyn performing arts events.
3. The South Street Seaport Booth sells tickets to evening performances on the day of the performance and matinee tickets the day before.
My favorite location is the Times Square booth because of how close it is to most Broadway theatres. The line is usually long, but it is definitely worth the wait!
If TKTS is not offering a deal for the show you want to see, go to the box office. This is what my friends and I opted to do this weekend. If you show your student ID, the box office may be able to offer you student discounts on the day of the performance.
The most risky but fun option is the lottery. You enter your name into a drawing at the box office, and the hour before doors open they draw names out. If your name is drawn you receive two tickets to the show. Although it is a risk, the chances of your name being drawn are usually pretty high.
Don't know what to do next weekend? Go see a show! It is a great experience, and if you search hard enough you will surely find unbeatable prices. It is definitely a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday.
