Fordham has a close connection with Super Bowl history.
On Sunday, the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks will play for a chance to
be Super Bowl Champions and take home the infamous Lombardi Trophy. Vince Lombardi
himself was a Fordham alumnus who graduated in 1937. Lombardi played football
for the Rams from 1933-1936 and is honored on campus today as part of the
“Seven Blocks of Granite.” While Lombardi did return to Fordham to coach before
accepting a position as an assistant coach with the New York Giants, it wasn’t
until 1959 when he headed to Green Bay to take on a 1-10-1 team that he really
made a name for himself. The Packers went on to win five NFL championships in
seven years, including two Super Bowls, and Lombardi became a football
legend.
