Sam's New York Top Three!

My name is Sam Vincent, and I am a junior in Fordham College at Rose Hill. I am majoring in international politics and economics, and I’m originally from West Palm Beach, FL.

One of my favorite things about Fordham is its proximity to New York City. Whether you use it for work, school, or just to have fun, New York is a resource that, in my opinion, is unmatched by anything else in the world. Below, I describe my three favorite places in the City that Never Sleeps …

Part of the American Museum of Natural History, the Rose Center for Earth and Space is a gold mine of information for professional astronomers and amateur stargazers alike. The center’s main feature is the Hayden Planetarium, a spherical space theater that is suspended virtually invisibly, as if by air. Inside, visitors can watch a presentation narrated by Whoopi Goldberg that highlights the universe’s many incredulities. Descending from the planetarium in a circular fashion is the Cosmic Pathway, on which a detailed timeline of the history of the universe is printed. The pathway leads to the main exhibition hall, where visitors can learn everything from their weight on the Moon to the life span of a Red Giant. It is impossible to go to this place and not feel significantly smarter after leaving! The American Museum of Natural History and the Rose Center for Earth and Space are both located on Central Park West between 77th and 81st Sts. and are open daily from 10am to 5:45pm. Suggested admission is $12 for students, but they’ll accept however much you’d like to offer them.

The Shake Shack

I have fond memories of grabbing shakes at roadside diners with my family on our many cross-country trips. With the Shake Shack, I can get the same experience right near where I live. No matter what you’re in the mood for, the Shake Shack can dish it out (as long as it’s grilled, deep fried, or spun!). I recommend a Double ShackBurger with fries and a malted vanilla milkshake. It’s so good, my mouth is watering just writing about it! While there are many Shake Shack locations in New York, the best one is in Madison Square Park, where Broadway and Fifth Ave. meet. It’s open every day from 11am to 11pm, and it’s priced just right for students!

The GarageWhether you love jazz or just chilling with some close friends in a cozy café, the Garage is the place for you! Featuring “more live jazz than anywhere in the world,” the Garage is a great place to hear New Orleans’ finest, with some onion rings and a Coke on the side. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even get asked to join the performance! The Garage is located on the corner of 7th Ave. and Grove St. and is open daily from 12pm to 2am.
