Let's Get Ready!

During my freshman year, I joined LGR as a verbal coach and have been involved with the program ever since. Essentially, the non-profit organization Let's Get Ready has partnered with Fordham to provide SAT tutoring and college guidance to underprivileged high school juniors and seniors in the Bronx. Fordham's chapter tutors students in math on Tuesdays and the verbal section on Thursdays. Coaches are all trained Fordham students who volunteer according to their preferred subject.

In addition to helping students with the SAT, we assist them with the college application process too. Many students are the first in their families to undergo the application process and we work to enhance their understanding of the oftentimes complicated process. We work on packaging their resumes and revising personal statements to reflect their best efforts. Students are also taken on local college tours to give them a taste of different schools near home.

I have found my experience as a coach very rewarding. It really has given me a new perspective on inner-city education and allowed me to help these students out. Seeing them succeed and reach their potentials has been extremely fulfilling and I would encourage others to join. For more information about LGR, please visit the national website. Also, LGR is currently is 1 of 5 finalists in Chase's American Giving Awards. To help the organization win a $1 million grant to serve more students across America, cast your vote on Facebook Dec. 1st-8th!
