Here at Fordham, there are many student-run organizations that strive to help the community. Relay For Life, a section of the American Cancer Society, is one of these. I, along with many members of the Fordham family, have cared for and supported many family members and friends who have suffered from cancer. These experiences encouraged me to join the Relay For Life committee last year.
I currently serve as the Team Recruitment Committee Chair. Our main function is to promote raising money to join the fight against cancer through outreach to RAs/RDs, friends, family members, and other Fordham clubs. We encourage them to form their own teams and raise money throughout the school year until the major Relay For Life event in April.
At last year's event, we raised about $23,000. This year, we are looking to more than double that amount with a goal of $45,000! By means of smaller events, fundraisers, and tabling throughout the year, we are very confident that we can reach this goal. The Relay For Life event in April is an amazing night of fun, fundraising, and learning about the impact that cancer has had on members of the Fordham community. There are raffles, prizes, games, food, performances by student-led groups, and a luminaria ceremony in which students light candles around a track commemorating loved ones who have passed away from cancer. A member of each team is constantly walking around the track because cancer never stops, and neither do we.
We hope that this year's relay will be bigger and better than past years! Our first event is our annual kickoff on Wednesday, Nov. 14th from 4-5:30 in O'Keefe Commons. There will be food, raffles, music, and opportunities to sign up and learn more about Relay.
