Psychology

There is no better place than New York City to be if you are interested in psychology or want to pursue a career in psychology. Since Fordham is in the heart of the “Big Apple”, it is a great school to attend if you are interested in psychology and want to pursue your interests further. First off, the psychology department at Fordham is great! Everyone in the psychology department is super friendly and approachable. The faculty and staff are all extremely kind and knowledgeable. The professors, who are all extremely accomplished experts in their prospective fields, absolutely love talking about their research interests and class lectures. You will find that their research interests are varied and unique. Almost all of the professors are currently working on research projects and gaining new knowledge that furthers the field. Students even have the opportunity to work on a faculty member’s project while still at the undergraduate level!
On campus, I am working as a research assistant on one of the faculty member’s current projects. I am extremely grateful for the experience because it will look great on my graduate school applications (which I need to start very soon!). However, the best part about my research assistant position is the undergraduate research grant I’ve just received! Now, I can enjoy learning more about clinical psychology while I receive funding. Fordham offers many opportunities for students to receive funding for research assistantships or for their own research endeavors. Now, I am beginning to do research for my senior honors thesis; doing an honors thesis during senior year is another great opportunity students receive to gain hands-on experience. Students can choose any topic they want to learn more about and, with the help of a faculty mentor, plan an entire independent research project. My thesis topic revolves around the mental health of young adults with child-onset diabetes. I can’t wait to see how my project turns out!
In addition to all of the opportunities for research students can find on campus, there are countless opportunities for internships in the city! New York City is home to many hospitals and other health facilities that students can volunteer or intern at to gain experience. For example, I have a friend who recently volunteered  at New York-Presbyterian at their inpatient psychiatric facility. He got to work with well-known doctors and other professionals and gained the networking skills needed to further his career. Whether you are interested in research or clinical work, Fordham is a great place to be if psychology is calling your name!
