Weekend Update

Last weekend, my friends and I from the Exec Board of the College Democrats went to Washington, D.C. for the College Democrats of America conference. The experience was amazing, and we got to see President Obama speak along with a private tour of the Capitol! While I missed Rose Hill, it was definitely an experience that I'll never forget.

After the constant snow we have been having here in New York I couldn't have been happier than when I saw this weekend was supposed to be a little warmer! My friends and I took advantage of the nicer weather and decided to spend Sunday in Manhattan! We spent the day walking around, getting some yummy food, and shopping.  We happened to walk right by Dylan's Candy Bar on the Upper East Side and couldn't resist, they have endless delicious treats! It was a great day and definitely made us want spring weather more than ever!

This weekend I met some of my friends in the city, and we went to the 9/11 Memorial.  It was such a nice day out, so afterwards we decided to walk along the High Line, which is an elevated set of train tracks that has been converted into a public park on the West Side.  We finished the day by having some delicious dinner in Chelsea Market.

This weekend was very relaxing because midterms are almost over! On Saturday, a few of my friends traveled to a doughnut shop called Dough in Flatiron, which is in Lower Manhattan. The donuts were amazing! Then, we shopped in the area and checked out Chelsea Market, which is a collection of unique shops and restaurants. With the weather getting warmer and the snow beginning to finally melt, the atmosphere in the city and on campus at Rose Hill is more exciting than ever!

A lot of Fordham students come from across the country or even from around the world, but if you're like me, you enjoy living just an hour away from campus. I usually take trips back to my house on weekends when I have a lot of studying to do - or when I really crave a homemade meal, like banana toast and some fresh delicious coffee! It's satisfying to know that my family -- my largest support system -- is just a short car ride away.

Fordham Ski and Snowboarding Club

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve wanted to go snowboarding. I had never gotten the opportunity to go during my childhood, and I was always nervous that I wouldn’t be good at it.

But this past weekend, I got to go snowboarding for the very first time, thanks to Fordham’s Ski and Snowboarding Club. The club plans daily trips to popular mountains in the surrounding area for reasonable prices.

On this particular trip, we went to Jack Frost Big Boulder mountains, which are located in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. The price for the trip included a lift ticket and a rental, and I paid a fairly cheap price for a whole day on the mountain.

We took a bus down to PA and were able to do whatever we wanted for the whole day. My friend helped me learn how to snowboard and I was able to make it down the hills in one piece! I had a lot of fun, and it made me realize that, even though Fordham is located in New York City, I still have the opportunity to snowboard at some of the best mountains in the country!

This weekend I headed to one of my favorite spots in NYC: the Cloisters. Located at the very top of Manhattan in Fort Tryon Park, the Cloisters is a medieval museum housed in five medieval French abbeys reassembled into a single building. It's like a tiny piece of Europe that’s accessible by the A train.

On Friday, I used an Amazon local deal to get half-off brick oven pizza in Manhattan at a restaurant named L'asso. Afterward, I went to support my friend and fellow Ram Nicole do stand-up comedy at The Village Lantern in Soho.

This past weekend, I went to the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center!  My Grandma is a big fan of the Philharmonic and had two extra tickets.  I brought my best friend and roommate, Lauren.  We got all dressed up and went to dinner at PJ Clarke's, right across from the theatre.  The Philharmonic was an orchestra made up of mostly string instruments and it was truly beautiful, the music was so relaxing!  It was a great night filled with friends, food and music, and I would recommend going before you graduate!

One of the best parts about studying abroad is becoming friends with people from schools all over the country. This past weekend I took the bus down to Philadelphia with a couple of friends to have a study abroad reunion. Lucky for me, Fordham is so close to great transportation options that visiting them is almost too easy! We did all things touristy like visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art (and ran up the Rocky steps), went ice skating at Penn’s Landing, saw Independence Hall, and even went to a Kevin Devine (a Fordham alum!) concert at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia. It was a great weekend and made me realize how easy it is to take weekend trips out of NYC. Places like Philly or New Haven and plenty of skiing or hiking trails in upstate New York are about two hours away, and Boston and Washington DC are about four hours away. It’s unlikely that you’ll ever find yourself sick of NYC, but it’s nice to know that the option to get away is always there!

After track practice on Saturday, my friends and I wanted to spend a little time together and relax so we decided to play in the snow! After a busy week of school work, it was fun to be together and do something silly. Another group of people were building a fort so we all decided to get a snowball fight going which was great!

This weekend, I had the ultimate lazy Saturday! Upon waking up to a still snowy campus, I took a 2 PM Metro North (Saturday and Sunday CityTicket is only $4!!!!) to Grand Central with my friends to check out to the most popular brunch spot in all of SoHo: Jack's Wife Freda. After only a few stops via the 6 Subway, we arrived at the cutest little cafe. We were seated among the hustle and bustle, and knew what we wanted immediately. I ordered the spicy shakshuka, an Israeli breakfast dish of baked eggs in a spicy sauce, and delicious lattes. We were served promptly and ate rapidly. After our late lunch, my friends and I made our way back on the Metro North for the quick trip back to Fordham where we watched movies and enjoyed the heat of the Residence Halls (who were busy preparing for the Super Bowl festivities for Sunday- wings anyone?).

It's been extremely cold in New York for the past few days so I spent this weekend mostly trying to stay warm in my dorm. On Friday and Saturday, my roommates and I had movie nights. On Sunday, I spent a lot of the day in the library reading and writing for some of my classes. There's a possibility of a snow day coming this week, but this weekend gave me the opportunity to stay ahead on my work.

This weekend, my friends and I got together and watched the Super Bowl in one of my friend's dorm rooms. We had tons of snacks, and we also ended up ordering a pizza! Fordham always has a lot going on, but sometimes it's fun to stay inside on a cold night with some good friends. I had a great time watching the Super Bowl with my friends on Sunday, and I already cannot wait for next year's game!

Juno Takes Fordham

A couple of days ago, word came to Fordham about the storm they've named Juno. Reports were calling for 20-36 inches of snow, and in a few hours, Fordham will find out just how much it's going to get. The weather report is calling for a 100% chance of precipitation from 10 PM to 10 AM, and everyone is anxiously waiting to find out just how much snow we'll all have to trudge through  tomorrow just to get to the cafeteria. States around us are in a state of emergency and the students have just received an emergency alert ordering all vehicles (except those for emergencies) off of the road after 11 PM.

Although this sounds despondent, Fordham is actually an awesome place to be during a blizzard! You get to stay warm with all of your friends in the dorms with the promise of no classes tomorrow! Campus food services will be open on their usual schedules, thanks to our incredible dining staff who are trooping through the storm with us. There's also the option of all of the delicious take-out food around campus. Options like sushi from Umai, or penne vodka from Michaelangelo's, or even pizza from Pugsley's are all available to the students so that even if we're stuck inside, we don't have to sacrifice a great dinner (we're always sure to tip well).

Furthermore, tomorrow we can all go out and play in the snow. Fordham is absolutely beautiful covered in snow, and there are endless outside activities to partake in. One of the Resident Assistants in my building has already scheduled a snowball fight as a program for the whole building! If, however, the snow is not for you, you can enjoy the extra day off with an Arrested Development marathon (thanks Netflix), catching up on some much-needed sleep, or doing some extra reading for your classes (if you're feeling really motivated)!

Holiday Season: Campus Ministry Edition

Campus Ministry is always planning something, and that especially holds true now that the holidays are coming up!  Over the past month there has been a Thanksgiving Food Drive collecting all nonperishable, canned, and baby foods as well as monetary donations.  The drop-off locations included the Rose Hill, Lincoln Center and Westchester campuses, making it convenient for all Fordham students to participate.  Countless donations were collected to help provide for our neighbors and friends in need this holiday season.

Now that Advent is around the corner, kicking off right after we return from Thanksgiving break, those programs are getting planned as well.  On December 3rd at 8pm there will be a Praise and Worship Advent Special, and the following night at 5:15pm there will be an Advent Reconciliation Service.  For students interested in retreats, there will be an Advent Mini-Retreat on December 7th from 10am-2:30pm.  This will be followed by a Fordham favorite, Lessons and Carols at 3pm in the University Church.  (The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.)  Also, the annual Campus Ministry Holiday Party will take place on December 10th at 5:30pm in the Ignatius Room.

Starting tomorrow, November 24th, there will be Holiday Coat and Toy Drives through December 17th.  They will be accepting donations of clean and gently used coats, gloves, mittens, hats, scarves, and boots in good condition.  The three campuses will also be collecting new unwrapped toys appropriate for children ages newborn to teenager, and each campus will be donating to a different cause.  Toys collected at Rose Hill will be distributed by Fordham Big Brothers and Big Sisters to our local community partners.  Donations from Lincoln Center will benefit Hour Children, and those from Westchester will be given to the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center.  There are endless ways to get involved and help out during the holidays at Fordham!
