LIVE - from Rose Hill: WFUV

The experience of working at WFUV is one that I could not get anywhere else. It has allowed me to work in a professional environment with incredibly talented people and artists. The music industry was always something that has interested me; now, to have the opportunity to work at a renowned radio station that is on the Rose Hill Campus is so exciting!

Shot taken at our front desk!
I personally work in the Engineering Department, which means that when artists come in to record live sessions, I set up the light and operate the cameras to film the live performances. From there, we edit the videos and publish them on YouTube. There are other people in the department that handle the soundboard and mixing the audio. So, if anyone wants to watch live performances from bands such as Mumford and Sons, Elle King or Kurt Vile, you can find them on YouTube. Or, you can work at the radio station and meet these artists for yourself!

Behind the Facade: Keating Hall

By far the most recognizable building of Fordham, and one of the most beloved, Keating Hall has been a symbol of Fordham since its construction. It was even ranked 12th on a Buzzfeed list of most Instagram worthy campus buildings. But what exactly is Keating Hall used for, and what is the story behind it?

Keating Hall was first opened in 1936 and is named for Fr. Joseph Keating, S.J. who was treasurer of Fordham from 1910-1948. As he was successful in keeping Fordham University financially afloat during WW1, the Great Depression, and WW2, it is fitting that he is honored on our campus.

The building was constructed in the Gothic Revival style, which was a very popular style among colleges and universities throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. From its gothic archways, ribbed vaulting, and stain glass windows, the influence of this style is clearly visible throughout the structure. It’s an incredibly beautiful building and it was even ranked 12th on a Buzzfeed list of most Instagram worthy campus buildings. Included on the façade of the building are different seals of Jesuit High Schools and Universities across the country. Several alumni of many of these Jesuit High Schools end up going to Fordham! And of course, the building contains the iconic Keating Bell Tower, which chimes can be heard every hour.

Today, the hall is used for many different purposes. Its’s main focus is classrooms, with its three fours and basement used almost entirely for this purpose. Almost all subjects meet in Keating Hall for class, such as English, History, Philosophy, and Theology. Even some business classes through the Gabelli School of Business are held in Keating.

Beyond just classrooms, Keating Hall also contains two auditoriums, with the Keating First Auditorium being one of the largest on campus. In the basement is a lounge area that also feature a small eatery to purchase drinks and snacks. The basement lounge is popular hangout spot for commuters between classes. Also contained in the basement is WFUV, which is Fordham’s student run, NPR-affiliated radio station. Additionally, the building also contains a chapel, offices for the Deans, and office for Pre-Professional Advising.

Clearly, there are many things that happen within Keating Hall. Just like the ram, Keating Hall remains a symbol of Fordham and one of the most beautiful college buildings constructed.

Weekend Update

Caroline Lebranti
Keating Hall on a bright and sunny day
This weekend at Fordham was pretty exciting since it was the first couple of days where it was super sunny and nice enough to be outside without bundling up! On Saturday CAB hosted a County Fair around Eddies where students could play carnival games and get free popcorn, cotton candy, and ice cream. After hanging out there for a while some friends and I hopped on the D train and made our way to Brooklyn where we basked in the glorious weather, played bocce in Park Slope, and got ice cream at Ample Hills Creamery (highly recommended... try their Mexican hot chocolate flavor!). Sunday was also great because not only was everyone out on Eddies playing Frisbee and sunbathing, but it was also the President’s Spring Preview! Campus was buzzing with current and prospective students and families which made for quite a lively afternoon.

Our delicious brunch

This past weekend, I had a great time celebrating my friend Rachael’s birthday with a delicious Sunday Brunch.  We went to the Gansevoort Hotel which has a delicious menu. Although it is a little pricey, I would highly recommend going for a special treat! Afterwards, we walked around the Meatpacking District for a little and enjoyed the crisp spring day.  I got the eggs Benedict which was to die for!  Although I have a lot of papers and assignments to finish up before the end of the year, I am glad I got to spend an afternoon relaxing and celebrating with my friends in such an amazing city!

Lake Michigan

This weekend, besides chatting with some prospective students about Fordham and the best places to eat on Arthur Ave, I visited Chicago. The weather was great, but this view of Lake Michigan doesn't quite beat the view of Central Park stretched out below you at Top of the Rock (30 Rockefeller Center's rooftop).

Great night for baseball

On Friday night, I went to the Yankee vs. Red Sock game. I got $10 tickets through the CAB raffle and the game wound up being the longest game in the history of Yankee Stadium.

This past Sunday was Admitted Students Day here at Fordham! It was great to talk
to prospective students and give them a chance to talk to current Fordham students
along with administrators to give them a better sense of what life at Fordham is like.

Fall at Rose Hill

A picture taken while jogging through the Botans.
Nothing beats the beauty of Rose Hill's campus this time of year- we weren't voted the "12th College Campus Most Made for Instagram" for nothing! The combination of changing leaves and cooler weather makes the atmosphere on campus even more exciting. The Botanical Gardens across the street from Rose Hill are especially beautiful this time of year. Students are seen frequently jogging through the trails or even studying in the gardens. Admission is free to the Botanical Gardens, so I make sure to take full advantage of them during the warmer months!

Keating Hall is also especially beautiful this time of year. It stands tall surrounded by colorful foliage and fallen leaves. Students take advantage of Eddie's by studying, eating, or just hanging out with friends before the weather gets cold. Soon enough, the lawn will be covered by snow, so students are making sure to make the most of these last few weeks!

With Halloween and Thanksgiving quickly approaching, students are keeping themselves busy with midterms. However, there are also a ton of fun activities happening around campus that students are keeping themselves involved in, such as football games, fundraisers and other campus and club sponsored activities. Fall is beautiful at Rose Hill, and our students love to keep themselves involved in all the campus and the Bronx has to offer.

Weekend Update

Sara Power

One of the best things about Fordham is that if you're having a lazy weekend, like I did, there is so much to appreciate around you. I honestly did not feel much like getting out after a week of hard work, but the little things like waiting in line for one of the caf's amazing weekend omelettes and seeing Keating hit with the perfect rays of a setting sun, did more than enough to brighten the mood. Fordham has a lot of great and impressive things to offer, but it is in the quiet moments that you most appreciate Fordham for its simple wonder.

Beautiful view of Keating Hall

On Friday evening, my friends and I went to a free event on the rooftop garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side. We had an incredible view of Central Park, and we even got to see the sunset behind the skyline! On Saturday we went out to brunch for my friend's 21st birthday. The restaurant was located right by the Hudson River, so we enjoyed a delicious meal with a lovely view.

There are so many opportunities to see the NYC skyline!
