My Favorite New York City Museum: The American Museum of Natural History

Today I went to the museum of Natural History, which is located on the Upper West Side right by Central Park. The area is my favorite in the city, and when you go to school in New York, Sunday's are for city adventures.

The museum of Natural History is a must-see when you live or are even just visiting the city. It's absolutely stunning, and they have everything from dinosaurs, to an amazing planetarium, to every kind of mammal and sea-life creature you could imagine. Experiencing it is so much cooler than reading about it, and what's awesome about going to Fordham is that so many classes incorporate real; hands-on activities that make your classwork come to life. Whether it's to the planetarium at the Natural History Museum for your Astronomy class, or to the Met for your art-history class, almost every class you take can be applied in some sort of interesting way in Manhattan, which makes things so much more interesting!

After getting lunch at a little cafe on the Upper West Side, we went to the Museum for a few hours and got lost in the exhibits, there's just so much to see. I appreciate experiences like these a lot because I know that my friends at other schools in more rural or even suburban areas just don't get to go these kind of places. I took plenty of pictures of course, and we got ice cream before we went home. It was a simple day, but a very memorable one nonetheless, and I can thank the best city in the world for that.

A Weekend Trip to Fire Island

This past weekend, I had to make the difficult decision of either staying for the much anticipated spring weekend, or going to my annual family reunion on Fire Island.  Although it was tough to choose, I decided to go with my family and catch to with all of my relatives whom I rarely see.  Fire island is extremely unique as there are no cars allowed- everyone bikes and walks.  It is a small, beachy community off the coast of Long Island, and the only way to get there is via ferry.  It was so great to spend quality time with my aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings and grandparents.  Although it was a bit chilly, we spent our days biking into town, taking walks along the ocean, playing games and enjoying delicious food.  Below are a couple pictures from my relaxing weekend!

Arthur Avenue: Not Your Average Cappuccino

Academics are incredibly important here at Fordham, but when we want to unwind from class and catch up with friends, Arthur Avenue is the place to go. 

I still remember my first time going to Bronx’s Little Italy after visiting Fordham during my junior year of high school. I had never been in such a neighborhood before, and it was fascinating seeing all of the quaint Italian restaurants and cafes.

I’ve made it my mission to visit every eatery on Arthur Avenue by the time I graduate. However, as I’m in the midst of my junior year, I’m slowly realizing that this might not be possible to accomplish in my remaining time at Fordham. 

There are so many options in Bronx’s Little Italy that are essential to try out; some have been around for years, and now ones open all the time. Inevitably, I’ve found my personal favorites, and I suggest them to every visiting family and prospective student I meet on campus.

A common misconception about Little Italy is that it’s only good for dinner, but Fordham students will tell you otherwise. There are plenty of dinner options for sure, but it’s just as easy to go out and grab a breakfast sandwich after a long night of studying, indulge in a quick cup of coffee and pastry between classes, meet friends for frozen yogurt when the weather’s nice, or grab a delicious slice of pizza – just because!

Not only that, but the area is also particularly affordable – especially since many of its patrons are very budget-concerned college students – and offers all different types of cuisines, not solely Italian (even though the Italian food here is second to none…). The area exudes a very family-friendly vibe, and the school spirit lives on in the neighborhood, even more so after homecoming and big football games when the streets fill with crowds of Fordham families and proud alumni.
