Instead of taking a fifth class this semester I choose to
intern. Twice a week I head downtown to
intern for the day. I have interned
before during the semester, a unique option only available to colleges in or
near cities. Having the opportunity to
intern for credit during a semester, just as if the internship was another
class, is rare among most college kids.
At some universities students have the option of taking a
semester (where they might have studied abroad) and interning in New York, at
Fordham, we just have to take the 17 minute metro north ride, or the 30 minute
ram van, or the 45 minute subway ride and we are in the heart of Manhattan.
This semester I am interning at Bonnier Corporation for
Working Mother Magazine. The opportunity
has allowed me to experience editorial meetings, their online magazine, their
research toward company rankings and the general atmosphere of a magazine.
I am grateful that I have the chance to work internships
during the school year, especially because most internships are unpaid. Therefore, during the summer I can work a
more relaxed, paying job (like camp counseling).
Also, Fordham offers endless resources for students to
obtain internships. Career services offers an online job posting site, a
mentoring program, resume building workshops, mock interview sessions and much
more.
Another benefit Fordham provides is that if the internship
is for credit, each student receives an adviser who will offer assistance and
check in on the progression of the internship. Also, after the student picks an adviser and receives the credit on their transcript, Fordham will provide free
ram van passes (the ram van brings students back and forth between Rose Hill
and Lincoln Center).
Interning offers great learning experiences that not only
help students prepare for post-college life, but also offers the opportunity to
supplement their academics. Interning during the school year is possible
because of Fordham’s proximity to Manhattan and Fordham’s administrations’ accommodations to their interning students.
