#FEARTHERAM

One of the coolest things about going to school at Fordham is the amount of school spirit we have on campus. Despite the fact that we are a medium sized school in the middle of a big city, Fordham is Division I for all of its varsity athletic teams, and students love supporting their fellow Rams at games and spirit events!

The gorgeous Rose Hill Gym is crowded with Rams! RAMTOWN2014!

Last night was a prime example of this: one of the biggest events of the fall semester is Ram Town, which kicks off the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. Think high school pep rally, but bigger and better! Students decked out in Fordham maroon pack the stands of the Rose Hill Gym, and have a great time cheering on their classmates.  There are also tons of games and competitions for fans to compete in, including a karaoke contest, relay races, shoot-outs, and dance-offs (Rams have some sick moves, fun fact!). In addition free tshirts for every person at the door, students are eligible for exciting prizes and giveaways, like iPads, TVs, and textbooks for a semester; this year one student won a free vacation in a free throw shooting contest!

Exciting athletics, crazy contests, and awesome prizes aside, fans attending Ram Town are also provided with an absurd amount of delicious, delicious food from Arthur Avenue (the Little Italy of the Bronx, which is right next door to Rose Hill’s campus), including pizza, pasta, wings, and desserts.

Wasn't kidding about the free food - my friend Matt stocked up on
mozzarella sticks, wings - oh, and an entire box of pizza? Don't worry, he shared!

Ram Town is a great way to get pumped for the upcoming season, and a fantastic time is had by all in attendance! Go Rams!

Fordham Football Making Headlines!

Let’s talk about Fordham Football!!! The Rams are currently 12-1 after a win over Sacred Heart in the first round of the NCAA FCS Championships this past weekend! Just two years ago, this same team was 1-10, but this Saturday, the team will head to Maryland to take on Towson in the second round of the NCAA FCS Championships at 1 pm! This is the first time the Rams have won 12 games since 1920, and it was also the first ever NCAA FCS Championship game won on Jack Coffey Field! Fordham Football was all over the news this past week; check out some of the articles!

  • ESPN calls Fordham New York’s playoff team! It looks like the Giants and the Jets are struggling, but the Rams are here to keep New York football on the map!
  • WFUV, Fordham’s own radio station, is also keeping plenty busy following the winning football team!
  • Los Angeles Dodgers sportscaster and Fordham alum Vin Scully is proud of the Rams! Scully recalls his some of his Fordham memories in the New York Post!
  • The Ram mascot even has something to say about the success of the football team this season!

It's been a magical season for the Rams! Proudly wearing my maroon and white, I'm headed to Towson on Saturday hoping to hear the victory bell sound across the Rose Hill Campus for the 13th time this season!

Some Friendly Competition

One of my favorite experiences that I have had at Fordham so far is with my intramural soccer team. As many of you know, at Fordham there are three different levels of soccer: varsity, club, and intramural. Although intramural may be the lowest level, it is certainly the most fun! Our intramural team plays other Fordham intramural teams once a week on either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday nights. The games usually are between 8p.m. and 11p.m. and there are two 20-minute halves for each game. Although the games are late at night, I really enjoy them because it forces me to take a break from studying and homework!

The referees are also Fordham students who usually play club or varsity soccer. The environment of the games is very laid back, but at the same time there is a lot of team spirit. Some teams make t-shirts or jerseys to represent their teams, but this is not required. One requirement of intramural soccer is that there needs to be at least two girls from each team on the field at all times. I really like this because this forces equal playing time and no one really overtakes the field! At the end of every season there are playoffs and one first place champion team. Intramural sports are a great way to meet new people at Fordham, bond with friends, or to try out a sport that is new to you since it is not too serious or competitive. GO RAMS!

Ram Town!

The Fordham Football team is undefeated with a record of 8-0, so students are especially proud to be Rams this semester! As winter draws closer, students are also getting excited for basketball season. This past Friday night was “Ram Town,” a pep rally for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams located in the Rose Hill Gymnasium. Students filled the gym for the event, which included food from Arthur Avenue (the little Italy of the Bronx located near the Rose Hill campus), free T-shirts, a DJ, and awesome prizes! This year, students won iPads, TVs, and one student even won an all-inclusive trip to Cancun.

As a member of the club Right To Play (a non-profit organization that brings sports equipment to children in impoverished areas around the world) on campus, I had the opportunity to help serve food at the event. I helped hand out food from Michelangelo’s, an Italian restaurant located on Arthur Avenue. Afterwards, I was able to join in the fun and cheer on the basketball team with my friends. I will definitely be going back next year and can’t wait for the season to start! Let’s go Rams!

Fordham in the News!

Over the past few weeks, Fordham has managed to be in the news quite a few times! With a winning football team and a beautiful campus to enjoy in the fall, it's an exciting time to be a student at Fordham!

Just last week, Fordham's beautiful Rose Hill Campus was featured on Business Insider! The article is complete with a picture tour of the campus! Read more here!

Fordham's football team is currently 7-0 for the first time since 1930! The Rams were recently featured in an article on BuzzFeed! Check it out here!

The New York Giants' current president John Mara graduated from Fordham Law School in the 1970s. The Mara's have a deep history with Fordham, as Wellington Mara (father of John Mara and former Giants president) was a Fordham classmate of the infamous Vince Lombardi! Mara says he's rooting for the Rams in an article about the history of Fordham Football that you can check out here!

The Rams were featured in an article by ESPN recalling the past success of the program and more about how the 2013 team is putting Fordham football back on the map! Check it out!

As a current Fordham student, there is no better time to say I'M PROUD TO BE A RAM!

Hail Men of Fordham Hail!!!

6-0!!!!! The Fordham Rams are now 6-0 after their Family Weekend win Saturday versus the now 4-1 Lehigh!!!  With the win, we are now #9 in the FCS rankings and #1 in the Patriot League! This is the best start in Rams history since 1988. To put that in prospective, in 1988 the Soviet Union was still in power and Microsoft just released Windows 2.1. Quite a bit has happened since then. And next week the Rams of the gridiron will try to increase it to 7-0 with a win against fellow Jesuit and Patriot Leaguer, Georgetown. This hasn’t happened since 1930. Do I really need to say anything about the history of that? Didn’t think so. But, in 1930, Vince Lombardi was still in high school. Yup, the Fordham great, member of Fordham’s Seven Blocks of Granite, future NFL Hall of Famer, and the namesake of the Super Bowl trophy wasn’t even enrolled at Fordham yet. Even Lombardi couldn’t help the Rams to a 7-0 start. So, this is a very exciting season for everyone at Fordham, to say the least!! Games are so popular that only $5 standing room tickets are available to the general public.

At this past game on Saturday, I was able to go onto the field and take pictures for our newspaper, The Fordham Ram. While on the field, I could sense the excitement everywhere; from the players, students, alumni, and our president, Fr. McShane. After each touchdown, even Fr. McShane was contributing to the cheerleader’s push-up celebration. We are all extremely excited about the next games and are sure to wear our “Ram Fan” shirts, sport our “Game On Fordham” signs, and “sing our battle song ‘till we do or die!!!”
