A Spontaneous Saturday in the City

Last weekend my friend flew in from Nashville to visit me. We had originally planned to go to NJ for a concert, but the concert was cancelled just days before. Because we no longer had plans, this became the perfect opportunity just to wander around campus and the city.

On Saturday we headed to the city on the D train with only a vague idea of what we wanted to do. We started our morning by walking the High Line, which is a park that stretches one mile across the tracks of an old railway line no longer in use. The High Line is located in the west side of lower Manhattan right near Chelsea Pier, so there are spectacular views of the city and you can even see the Statue of Liberty. After our walk we headed under the High Line to Chelsea Market, an indoor, sophisticated food court, to eat a snack.

Then we made our way to Times Square.  After a little shopping, we decided to wait in line at the TKTS counter to get discounted Broadway tickets for an evening performance. We were able to get tickets to First Date for 40% off. Because we had a couple of hours before the show, we walked up to Central Park and wandered around just enjoying the beautiful weather and fall colors. We grabbed dinner at Shake Shack, where we could not resist treating ourselves to some of their legendary shakes with our meal.

Finally it was time for the show we made our way to the theater. We had seats in the front row of the mezzanine. My friend and I loved First Date; it was hilarious and relevant, and the songs were great too.  I was especially excited to see Zachary Levi (aka the voice of Flynn Rider) as the male lead. Even though our original plans fell through, my friend and I still had a fun weekend.
