Fordham Basketball Games!

This past Wednesday, my friends and I attended the Fordham men’s basketball game against the University of Rhode Island. Going to basketball games is always fun, but this season is especially exciting because 2015 marks the ninetieth anniversary of the legendary Rose Hill Gym.

Though it isn’t quite the size of other Division 1 schools’ gyms, the Rose Hill Gym is one of the oldest in the country and is chock full of history. Because of its old hardwood floors and the close proximity of the crowd to the players, playing at the gym can be extremely intimidating. Shooting free throws is almost impossible for the opposing teams when the entire student section is essentially right on top of the court, distracting the players.

Wednesday’s game was extremely exciting. The teams were tied for the end of the second half, but, unfortunately, URI scored at the buzzer and won by a single point. Still, the Fordham Rams played very well, and everyone had a blast cheering them on. Going to basketball games and other sporting events is one of my favorite things to do as a Fordham student!

Finals week can be stressful, and sometimes you just need to get away from all the studying and do something fun. This weekend, I had the opportunity to do something both fun and productive! A few of my friends and I visited the Hayden Planetarium in New York City as an extra credit assignment for our astronomy class. It was an amazing experience, all of the exhibits were completely relevant to what we learned in class. The best part is that we were back to campus in time for dinner… and more studying. A visit to the planetarium was exactly what we needed to recharge!

My weekend was filled with studying for finals, which start today. However, as a break from studying for finals, my roommates and I did Secret Santa to celebrate the holidays!

On Sunday, I went to Madison Square Garden to watch the Men's basketball team take on St. John's. It was so much fun getting to see the Rams play at such a famous venue. We even got to see a few New York Knick players warming up after the game!

One of the coolest things about going to school at Fordham is the amount of school spirit we have on campus. Despite the fact that we are a medium sized school in the middle of a big city, Fordham is Division I for all of its varsity athletic teams, and students love supporting their fellow Rams at games and spirit events!

Last night was a prime example of this: one of the biggest events of the fall semester is Ram Town, which kicks off the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. Think high school pep rally, but bigger and better! Students decked out in Fordham maroon pack the stands of the Rose Hill Gym, and have a great time cheering on their classmates.  There are also tons of games and competitions for fans to compete in, including a karaoke contest, relay races, shoot-outs, and dance-offs (Rams have some sick moves, fun fact!). In addition free tshirts for every person at the door, students are eligible for exciting prizes and giveaways, like iPads, TVs, and textbooks for a semester; this year one student won a free vacation in a free throw shooting contest!

Exciting athletics, crazy contests, and awesome prizes aside, fans attending Ram Town are also provided with an absurd amount of delicious, delicious food from Arthur Avenue (the Little Italy of the Bronx, which is right next door to Rose Hill’s campus), including pizza, pasta, wings, and desserts.

Ram Town is a great way to get pumped for the upcoming season, and a fantastic time is had by all in attendance! Go Rams!

Weekend Update

Hello all! This past week Fordham University was closed for Spring Break, which means there were tons of things that our students were doing to enjoy their time off. Check out what a few of them did below!

This weekend I went shopping for an evening gown to wear to Senior Ball in May. Senior Ball is a formal dinner/dance held at Pier Sixty during the week before graduation. It gives seniors a chance to dress up and celebrate after four successful years at Fordham!

This weekend I took advantage of the great weather we were experiencing here in New York, and took a walk around Greenwich Village. A stop at House of Oldies Rare Records on Carmine led to a great vinyl find, The Velvet Underground and Nico, while a small bookshop on Bleecker held a book authored by Bob Dylan.

This weekend I had the opportunity to travel to Waco, Texas as a member of the Fordham Dance Team with the Women's Basketball Team, the Fordham Band, and the Fordham Cheerleaders to support the women in the first round of the Women's NCAA championship! The team played Saturday afternoon at Baylor University against California.

This weekend I was in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic with other Fordham kids for a Spring Break vacation. We were there for five days and ended up meeting up with other students that were also staying there.

Between deals you can only find in New York City and some fun experiences that are unique to our Rose Hill campus, students enjoyed a variety of activities this past weekend. Check it out below!

February 17-March 7 is NYC Restaurant Week, where people can visit numerous restaurants and enjoy three course meals for $25 (lunch) or $38 (dinner). This past Friday, I had an amazing dinner at The Capital Grille. I ate a bowl of New England Clam Chowder, filet mignon, mashed potatoes, and a piece of chocolate cake for less than $40! This was a deal I could not miss out on!

I met up with my mom and sisters in the city to grab lunch and see a matinee of The Bridges of Madison County on Broadway.

I went to the men's basketball vs. George Washington yesterday afternoon. The final score was GW Colonials 70-67.

Happy Monday! The cold front has returned here in the Bronx, but between a Broadway show, a cool restaurant, and a Fordham sporting event, there's still plenty to do to escape the dipping temperatures! Check it out below!

This weekend I went for a Saturday brunch at the Red Rooster, located in the heart of Harlem. The restaurant serves comfort food with a European flair, highlighting the neighborhood's diverse culinary tradition. The restaurant embodies the jazz culture of Harlem, and is a piece of New York history. It is establishments like these that showcase the rich culture that composes NYC.

And lastly, Fordham Men's Basketball matched up against Atlantic 10 opponent La Salle in a game at the Rose Hill Gym this past Saturday. Senior students that participate in the Cheerleading squad, Pep Band, and Fordham sports fan club, the Fordham Fanatics, were recognized before the game. The competition was stiff and the score remained close throughout the game's entirety, but La Salle scored with a buzzer-beating layup and the Rams suffered a heartbreaking loss of 64-62. Although the outcome was disappointing, it was an overall great showing for the Rams, with much of the school packing the stands in support!
