Being from the Pacific Northwest, coffee is a big part of my life. When I decided to come to Fordham, one of the first things I looked at was where I could find good coffee in New York. Fortunately, New York has everything and anything you could ever want, including amazing coffee roasters and cafés! So, if you are a coffee enthusiast like me, or just want to know a couple of cool places to check out while wandering around the city, then this blog is for you. Every month I’ll highlight a different café/roaster, directions from campus, and great coffee drinks to try out.
My first trip was to Stumptown Coffee Roasters at West 29th and Broadway, connected to the lobby of the Ace Hotel. Stumptown originally started in my hometown of Portland, Oregon and it’s a local favorite. Stumptown prides itself on its attention to detail and quality, roasting only small batches of beans to ensure the finest quality coffee. Two years ago they decided to expand and opened up a roastery and café in New York.
Getting to Stumptown from Rose Hill is a breeze. If you prefer the subway, simply walk a few blocks up Fordham Road to the D train and take it downtown to 34th Street/Herald Square and you’re there. If the Metro North seems more your style, hop on at the Fordham station and ride it to Grand Central. From there, it’s a short stroll down 5th avenue to 29th Street.
I am an espresso lover, be it a Latte, Mocha, Americano, Cappuccino, Macchiato (the traditional 3 oz espresso drink, not that caramel thing from Starbucks), or a straight shot, espresso is my thing. And Stumptown has mastered espresso. If you’re more of a French press, tea, or hot cocoa type of person, Stumptown still has just what you’re looking for. Not to mention they stock delicious pastries from local bakeries. There are no chairs or tables in the café itself since it’s considered an espresso bar, but the lobby of the Ace Hotel is warm and inviting with large couches and chairs to relax upon while you’re enjoying your drink. Stumptown is definitely worth a visit and I highly recommend it!
