Weekend Update

It's easy to see why students love Fordham during the holidays!
Linda Mule
The buzz is back on campus! After students departed as early as the Monday before Thanksgiving, Fordham's campus is back to being the fast paced and upbeat campus we know and love. The only difference? The huge wreathes and holiday decor which adorn buildings around campus! The holiday season is upon us at Fordham, with everything planned from a holiday fair with free sign ups to go ice skating in the city, Hanukkah celebrations, and Christmas carols! This is a magical time of year, and students are happier than ever to be back home for the holidays, their Fordham home.

The New York Botanical Garden is right across the street from the main entrance to Fordham.  Every year they have a Holiday Train Show, featuring model trains on a track that runs through a miniature city.  The replicas of popular buildings and landmarks are made of natural materials like bark and leaves.  It is a holiday must!

This weekend my parents came to watch me perform with the University Choir in the Annual festival of Lessons and Carols.  Alumni, students, families, and visitors come from all over to see the show, and for many of them it marks the start of the holiday season.  During some downtime, my mom and I walked down 5th Avenue to check out the window displays at Saks and the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.  We stopped at the American Girl Place along the way to see some of my favorite toys from when I was a little kid.  The (window) shopping and concert really helped me get into the spirit!

Weekend Update: Mega Post!

This is a mega post combining last weekend (our long weekend) and this past weekend. Last weekend was Presidents' Day Weekend, and we got some snow heading into the weekend. Check what our ambassadors were up to!

Rose Sherman
I went to Inside the Actors Studio to watch the cast of How I Met Your Mother talk about their lives and the final season of the show. It was such an incredible opportunity and definitely wouldn't be possible if I didn't live in New York.

Jessica Timko
I went to Brooklyn Flea, an indoor flea market with about 120 vendors, and Smorgasburg, which is an all-food market with about sixty vendors. Although I didn't find anything to buy at the flea market, my friends and I enjoyed a delicious variety of food which included pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, chocolate cake, doughnuts, and macaroons.

Shannon McKenna I am an RA in O'Hare Hall (a sophomore residence hall) and hosted a President's Day Trivia and Ice Cream Party for residents on Monday night! About 40 students attended and enjoy ice cream while learning some new fun facts about US presidents!

This past weekend boasted high temperatures, getting everyone in the mood for spring! Learn what the weekend had in store!

This past Saturday I competed at the Mid-Atlantic Quarterfinals for International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (the competition featured in Pitch Perfect) at Rutgers University with Fordham's co-ed jazz a cappella group, the Hot Notes! We didn't place, but we were just happy to be there since it was our first time at competition. We're also very excited that the Fordham Ramblers placed second and qualified for Semi-Finals. Go Rams!

Juliette ArcodiaThis weekend, since it was so beautiful, a couple friends and I walked down Arthur Ave for frozen yogurt and Italian pastries. We stopped at the new Peachwave on Arthur and 187th and then at Palombo's bakery to pick up cannolis for my Go! reunion later that night!

And for myself, we celebrated the 22nd birthday of one of my best friends, Meghan! We went to Harry's, a restaurant and brunch spot in the Financial District. It was such a beautiful day, reaching up to 50-something degrees. We were strolling around and then decided to cross the Brooklyn Bridge! Even though I've done it many times before, I definitely had "a moment" of gratitude that I have these opportunities as a college student in New York.

Oh, What a Night: FNO 2011

On September 8th, my friends and I headed into the city for Fashion’s Night Out. Created by legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour back in 2009, Fashion’s Night Out was pursued to restore consumer confidence in the fashion industry amidst the economic recession and kick-off New York Fashion Week. For one evening, retailers extended their hours and lured customers inside with celebrity appearances and giveaways. Three years later, it has quickly evolved into an international phenomenon with events taking place as far away as Australia and China. However, as the fashion capital of the world and original site of FNO, there is no question that NYC hosts the largest bash of them all.

This year’s event was the biggest yet with retailers all over the city sponsoring events and giving out tons of free swag. While I worked my way up 5th Avenue, other popular shopping districts near Columbus Circle (right by Fordham's LC campus!), SoHo, and Williamsburg, were swarmed by fashionistas. On 5th Avenue, I was in sensory overload from the vibrant atmosphere. With colorful displays abounding storefronts, music blasting, and people dressed to the nines, I could hardly recognize this familiar street. Inside almost every store, DJs spun, live models showed off new styles, and employees doled out free refreshments. In the Tiffany & Co. store, there was even an airbrush tattoo station and an assortment of chocolate treats. Meanwhile, the highlight of my night was Guess, which featured free manicures, cupcakes, and a photo booth. Not to mention, I got to meet model Kate Upton. She was just one of the countless celebrities about; we saw photographer Nigel Barker at Nine West too! There were also several musical artists, including Joe Jonas, who performed in the area.

Overall, I would highly recommend going and taking advantage of this unique NYC experience. If you like to shop and are interested in fashion, it’s definitely a great way to step inside some of the more upscale stores and discover new trends. I know that I share a love of fashion with numerous students on-campus and was fortunate to have heard about FNO during a Fashion for Philanthropy club meeting last year.

Considering going next year? Here are a few tips from my experience:

1. Go early- Although the night doesn’t officially start until 6pm, most of the major department stores begin offering free salon services around 3 or 4pm. Many stores have long lines or run out of freebies later in the night, so don’t be fashionably late!

2. Plan ahead- If you go to the official website, there is a free tool to help you arrange your itinerary and map out your top picks. Be sure to check out retailers’ websites and research offerings as stores often feature exclusive coupons online.

3. Shop smart- Don’t let the contagious energy go to your head and spend half your semester’s allowance on the new “it” pair of shoes. If you’re looking to make purchases, your best bet is to stay clear of major stores and head to smaller boutiques with better sales.
