New York sports fans are hard to ignore. If there isn't a guy sitting right in front of you in your class wearing a backwards Jets hat, there's that guy on the D with the iconic Yankee 'NY' tatooed up his sleeve. And luckily, professional sports are conveniently scheduled so you never have to go a season without a team to cheer on.
After the Giants won the Super Bowl this past Sunday, fans flooded the streets of lower Manhattan to see their baby-faced quarterback hoist their trophy after a heart stopping game in Indianapolis. I'll be honest, I'm not a Giants fan. But it's hard not to feel jealous/envious/ and a little bit happy for all the Fordham students I encountered on my commute to work who voluntarily woke up before 10am.
Now, basketball's newest sensation is Jeremy Lin, the 23-year-old point guard has brought even more attention to New York sports.
For a city that has a reputation for people with a rude attitude, it's pretty amazing to see the camaraderie that comes out of the mutual love or lament over the same New York sports team. Plus New York's finest sports teams are never more than a train (or a few) away.
My roommate from Massachusetts now hates me.
