LIVE - from Rose Hill: WFUV

The experience of working at WFUV is one that I could not get anywhere else. It has allowed me to work in a professional environment with incredibly talented people and artists. The music industry was always something that has interested me; now, to have the opportunity to work at a renowned radio station that is on the Rose Hill Campus is so exciting!

I personally work in the Engineering Department, which means that when artists come in to record live sessions, I set up the light and operate the cameras to film the live performances. From there, we edit the videos and publish them on YouTube. There are other people in the department that handle the soundboard and mixing the audio. So, if anyone wants to watch live performances from bands such as Mumford and Sons, Elle King or Kurt Vile, you can find them on YouTube. Or, you can work at the radio station and meet these artists for yourself!

Engineering at Fordham

If you are interested in engineering, then you should definitely consider Fordham. Fordham isn’t technically an engineering school, but that doesn’t mean opportunities aren’t offered. One program that you can go into is the 3-2 Engineering program!

In the 3-2 program, you can choose your science major at Fordham in chemistry, biology, physics or computer Science. After three years of study at Fordham, the next two years of education can either be spent at Columbia University or Case Western University (hence the name “3-2”). There is also tons of engineering fields to go into while at these schools. And, the best part is that after five years, you will have two bachelor’s degrees – one from each school – and you get to have two graduation ceremonies within the same week! Go you!

The 3-2 Engineering Program at Fordham is probably one of the biggest opportunities I have ever taken. When I first learned of this program, Fordham immediately rose to the top of my list of colleges. I am currently majoring in chemistry in the 3-2 Engineering program and couldn't be any happier. It's also amazing to know that I will graduate from two major colleges in the world. If you're thinking about engineering, consider Fordham. It's definitely an opportunity worth taking!

From Fordham to the Naval Academy

A few weeks ago I was chosen along with three other undergraduate students to represent Fordham at the 2013 United States Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference in Annapolis, Maryland.  Over four days, 120 undergraduate students from 28 different colleges and universities participated in this conference.  The three focus areas of this year’s conference were Renewable Energy and Alternative Fuels, Cyber Space and Security, and Health and Sustainability.  We attended lectures from guest speakers with expertise in these areas, and we also heard from Dr. Arati Prabhakar, the Director of Defense Advances Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Honorable G. Wayne Clough, the 12th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and the Honorable Kathryn D. Sullivan, the Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Acting NOAA Administrator.

Each student chose one of the three themes of the conference to focus on, and we were split into small groups based on our choices.  Between the lectures, we met with our groups in order to discuss the challenges associated with our specific topic.  We then isolated one particular challenge and created a presentation about our proposed solution to that challenge.  I chose to focus on Health and Sustainability, and my group decided to address waterborne illnesses in third-world countries.  Our solution included a mobile health clinic and an education center to train the locals in prevention and treatment techniques. 

During breaks between sessions, we were able to tour the Naval Academy and interact with some of the Midshipmen.  I especially enjoyed watching Noon Formation, where all the Midshipmen line up before lunch.  We also participated in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) challenge where we built a device to launch a ping-pong ball at a target ten feet away.  My team tied for first place!

I had a wonderful time at the Naval Academy, and I want to thank Fordham for covering my travel expenses so that I could attend this conference.
