Relay for Life at Fordham!

Last Friday, April 21st was Fordham College at Lincoln Center's 9th annual Relay for Life event! The event was a huge success, and the original fundraising goal of $5,000 was almost doubled, with the collective efforts of the participants reaching a total of $8,105 (and counting)! All proceeds from Relay for Life go directly to the American Cancer Society to provide services to cancer patients and contribute to cancer research.
Relay for Life was held on Friday, 4/21 from 4-10pm in the Indoor Plaza.
Each team hosted an individual fundraiser to raise money during Relay for Life.  This year, teams were especially creative with their fundraisers, selling temporary tattoos, succulents, raffle tickets, cupcakes, hosting "Pie an RA," and more! Because of the amazing and dedicated teams, Relay for Life brought in many new registrants on during the event.
The RHA team sold slime at their fundraising table!
Relay for Life is a bit different at FCLC than at most universities because of its small campus, but that doesn't stop the students' enthusiasm! The participants continuously walked laps in the Indoor Plaza to show their commitment to the cause.

Relay for Life participants were excited to take to first lap!
The FCLC branch of Colleges Against Cancer has worked all year to ensure that Relay for Life is a success, hosting fundraisers and team building events and coordinating with sponsors in and outside of Fordham.  This year, we were able to raffle off amazing prizes like free SoulCycle passes, Fordham swag, Amazon gift cards, and a Kindle Fire thanks to the many amazing sponsors of the event.

Fordham College at Lincoln Center's Relay for Life has become a staple spring event over the past nice years, and it gets better and better with each passing year!

Relay for Life at Fordham!

Spring is around the corner, and that means that Fordham College at Lincoln Center's Relay for Life event is coming up! This year is FCLC’s 8th annual Relay, and the planning committee is working to make sure that it’s the best yet!

Eunice Jung (FCLC '20) sits in the plaza to get Fordham students excited about Relay for Life.

In order to get students excited and informed, FCLC’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer hosted a Relay for Life Kick Off to spread the word about the event and the cause. At the Kick Off, students could register and form their teams.

Relay for Life is a globally recognized event created by the American Cancer Society. It focuses on team fundraising and solidarity in order to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. There are thousands of Relay for Life events every year, and FCLC's will be happening on Friday, April 21st from 4:00pm- midnight!

FCLC's Relay for Life is Friday, April 21st!

Spring Events at Fordham

There is never a dull moment at Fordham, and every season has its perks.  But with the spring in full bloom, campus has been especially busy.  Friday evening the Autism Speaks club held their annual Light it Up Blue event to help raise autism awareness.  It took place in O’Keefe Commons from 6pm-10pm, with food and entertainment all night.  There were live performances by The Fordham Dance Team and The Ramblers, as well as raffle prizes including gift certificates to several different local eateries.  There were hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, dessert and more.  Students were encouraged to wear blue clothes, and temporary tattoos were available at the door.  There was a great turnout!

Spring at Fordham

On Saturday Eddie’s Parade was packed all day long, with people playing different sports and just relaxing on blankets.  Relay for Life took place from 2pm-10pm, which brought an extra excitement to campus.  The walk took place around the perimeter of Eddie’s, and there were games, food, and performances all day long.  Later, Fordham’s Hellenic Society held their annual Greek Night at 7pm in the McGinley Ballroom to celebrate their culture.  The night included a dance performance by club members, catered traditional Greek food, a DJ and dance floor, raffle prizes, and drinks for those 21 and over.  All students are welcome and I will definitely be returning next year!

Eddie's was packed all weekend!

Community Service on Campus

During the Spring Semester, Fordham has many different opportunities to participate in community service activities on campus. Last weekend, I participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event with the Fordham Dance Team. This event is held in order to raise money for the American Cancer Society to fund research and to support those diagnosed with cancer. At Fordham, the event was held on Eddie’s (the big grass area in the middle of campus) from 2pm to 10pm. While at the event, at least one person must be walking around the track at all times. Throughout the night there were different races and performances to keep participants busy. Being able to participate in an event like this right on campus is such a great opportunity that Fordham offers.

A second community service event at Fordham during the Spring Semester is Light it Up Blue, presented by Autism Speaks. I attended this even last night, also with the Fordham Dance Team. Entry was only $2 if you wore blue. At the event, there were various performers, raffles, and food. The money raised from the event went towards Autism awareness and funding. These are just two philanthropic events on campus in the spring. Fordham has plenty more to offer!

Colleges Against Cancer

Here at Fordham, students have been starting new clubs left and right. Just this past year, a new club called Colleges Against Cancer, which benefits the American Cancer Society, was added to the growing list of student-run organizations.  Colleges Against Cancer brings together students who have been personally affected by the issue of cancer to plan many fundraising events, including ACS's largest event, Relay For Life. After interning for ACS this previous summer (made possible with much help from our ACS staff liaison--shows that you can even network through extracurriculars!), I was excited for this club to come into fruition.

I am currently serving as the Co-Team Recruitment Chair for my second straight year. My main function is to promote raising money to join the fight against cancer through outreach to RAs/RDs, friends, and other Fordham clubs. We encourage them to form their own teams and raise money throughout the school year leading up to the major Relay For Life event in April.

The Relay For Life event is held every year at Fordham. Last year, we raised over $30,000 towards cancer research--our highest fundraising total yet! The committee and I were thrilled and are looking to raise $45,000 this year. By means of smaller events, fundraisers, and tabling throughout the year, we are very confident that we can reach this goal.

At the main relay event in April, a member of each team is constantly walking around the track because cancer never stops, and neither do we!

We hope that this year's relay will be bigger and better than past years! Our first event is our annual kickoff on Monday, December 2nd from 5-7 in McGinley. There will be food, raffles, music, and opportunities to sign up and learn more about Relay for Life.

Fight Cancer! Join Relay For Life!

Each year, millions of people are affected by cancer in some way; whether they are caring for a loved one who suffers from the disease, or they are suffering themselves. I have been one of those people, as I have had to deal with close family members and friends who have battled cancer. Because of my experience, I was inclined to join Fordham's Relay For Life Committee, whose main mission is to unite the Fordham community in fighting for a cure for cancer.
Being a member of this committee has been a very positive experience. Last semester, we raised thousands of dollars through tabling in the McGinley Center, our kickoff event, our Turkey Trot, and by simply asking our friends and family members for donations. This semester has also been very successful so far in that we are continuing to fundraise in McGinley, hosted a 3-on-3 tournament, and held a "Sponsor-A-Basket" fundraiser at a few of our basketball games. Our biggest event is yet to come, however.
On Friday, April 20th, Relay For Life will be held in the Lombardi Fieldhouse. Those who attend this event will see performances from student groups such as the Ramblers and the B-Sides, participate in numerous activities, hear inspiring speeches from cancer survivors and caregivers, and donate even more money to the American Cancer Society.
Raising money to help fight cancer has been an amazing experience, one that I will continue to do for many years. To sign up for the Relay For Life event, you can go onto www.relayforlife.org/fordhamuniversity. On this site, you can create your own team, join an existing team, and/or simply donate to the cause. Our goal is to raise about $30,000, so spread the word! Every little penny counts!

Fighting Cancer at Fordham

Picture it. You are standing in the Indoor Plaza at Fordham Lincoln Center. Class has just gotten out and the place is flooded with people. Students with their faces glued to the screens of their phones or iPods, trying to avoid the delicious calories that are being offered by various clubs and GO teams; and I have to admit this is usually me. However today was different, today I was the one sitting behind those tables, providing the sweet treats and trying to coerce people to come donate.

The reason? Relay for Life. Up until I came to Fordham I had no idea what Relay even was. I found out that Relay is a global event that is held every year by the American Cancer Society and its main goal is to fundraise money and awareness for cancer research. There are variations of how each Relay is ran, but here at Fordham LC, it is a day-long event in which teams volunteer and raise money for cancer care. The student organization Colleges Against Cancer host’s Fordham College at Lincoln Center's Relay for Life every year. This year there are 14 teams (mine being the best of course!) that are working hard trying to find ways to raise money to meet their team’s goal-which is why I found myself on the Plaza today.

I am captain of the Campus Ministry LCs Relay for Life team and my seven teammates and I are doing what we can to raise money. One way in which we are able to do that is to table. Tabling is when an organization on Campus commandeers one of the tables lined up in the Plaza and sets up shop. Today my team is providing hot cocoa, green tea, home-baked chocolate and sugar cookies (which are delicious if I do say so myself), brownies, and Penne alla Vodka with Italian bread with a suggested donation of one dollar. Spending the day with my team has been such a great experience, I feel this is a great way to bond and become closer. I have been more than moved over the generosity of the students and staff who have been donating. Many will stop just to chat and give a dollar and not take anything! The best part about the day is that we are raising money for such a great cause! I’m really so proud of my team and for the Fordham Lincoln Center community for coming together and realizing the bigger picture.

Will we meet the goal? We’ll find out April 21st!
