Fordham offers great communications classes. In the
classroom we have the ability to learn about the history and techniques behind
television, radio, film and journalism.
However, unfortunately because of time and resources it is rare to
receive regular and consistent hands-on experience in these fields.
As a communications major, I wanted to have the opportunity
to learn more than a classroom can teach.
Therefore, I joined Fordham
Nightly News. As a member of the
technician team on FNN, I have learned to apply what I have learned from my
professors into real life experiences.
FNN is a nightly news program that is completely staffed by
Fordham students. There are five
producers, one assigned to each day of the week. The producers compile the
scripts and are in charge of running the show.
In the control room, there are technicians who are in
control of the microphones and the audio, a switch board operator and a
character generator. These three
technicians work closely with the talent and the technicians in the
studio.
In the studio there are technicians who control the cameras
and the teleprompter. Alongside these
students is the on-air talent. Each show
has two anchors, a sports anchor, an entertainment reporter and a weather
person. In addition each show features
specials which may include a political, social or academic aspect.
The news segment covers local Bronx, Fordham and world news,
offering students a quick and easy way to stay updated with the news.
The studio is located in the basement of Walsh library on
the Rose Hill campus. Every evening from
5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. the program airs on Channel ten, a local Fordham
network. However it can also be viewed live
on the Walsh library website.
In addition to the nightly news program, this year, some FNN
members have started a morning show that airs every Wednesday morning from
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Fordham Mornings
doubles the amount of time of an FNN broadcast and therefore has the
opportunity to discuss and illustrate more about life at Fordham and in New
York City.
To watch FNN or Fordham
Mornings, tune in to Channel 10, or log on to http://www.library.fordham.edu/livestream.html
