Weekend Update

Caroline Lebranti
Keating Hall on a bright and sunny day
This weekend at Fordham was pretty exciting since it was the first couple of days where it was super sunny and nice enough to be outside without bundling up! On Saturday CAB hosted a County Fair around Eddies where students could play carnival games and get free popcorn, cotton candy, and ice cream. After hanging out there for a while some friends and I hopped on the D train and made our way to Brooklyn where we basked in the glorious weather, played bocce in Park Slope, and got ice cream at Ample Hills Creamery (highly recommended... try their Mexican hot chocolate flavor!). Sunday was also great because not only was everyone out on Eddies playing Frisbee and sunbathing, but it was also the President’s Spring Preview! Campus was buzzing with current and prospective students and families which made for quite a lively afternoon.

Our delicious brunch

This past weekend, I had a great time celebrating my friend Rachael’s birthday with a delicious Sunday Brunch.  We went to the Gansevoort Hotel which has a delicious menu. Although it is a little pricey, I would highly recommend going for a special treat! Afterwards, we walked around the Meatpacking District for a little and enjoyed the crisp spring day.  I got the eggs Benedict which was to die for!  Although I have a lot of papers and assignments to finish up before the end of the year, I am glad I got to spend an afternoon relaxing and celebrating with my friends in such an amazing city!

Lake Michigan

This weekend, besides chatting with some prospective students about Fordham and the best places to eat on Arthur Ave, I visited Chicago. The weather was great, but this view of Lake Michigan doesn't quite beat the view of Central Park stretched out below you at Top of the Rock (30 Rockefeller Center's rooftop).

Great night for baseball

On Friday night, I went to the Yankee vs. Red Sock game. I got $10 tickets through the CAB raffle and the game wound up being the longest game in the history of Yankee Stadium.

Another lovely shot of Keating

This past Sunday was Admitted Students Day here at Fordham! It was great to talk
to prospective students and give them a chance to talk to current Fordham students
along with administrators to give them a better sense of what life at Fordham is like.

Weekend Update

This NJ Transit map shows you how to get anywhere
Caroline Dunn
I spent the weekend at home in the suburbs of Philadelphia. While the Bronx and my hometown are only a 2 hour drive, without a car traveling from NY to PA can take much longer than expected. My other students and commuters from Philadelphia believe their only affordable option is a Mega or Bolt Bus which can cost as little as $6, but can take up to 5 hours (not to mention the extra trains from the Bronx and/or to the suburbs). An Amtrack train can take you into center city in about 90 minutes, but can cost almost $100. The hack from getting for NY to PA is not to go to PA at all! The New Jersey transit, which costs $15.50 can take you directly to Trenton Transit Center in anywhere from 60-90 minutes. Then from NJ, SEPTA transportation lines offer routes to Philadelphia and its surrounding areas. If you're lucky, maybe you can even manage for a parent to make the drive to Trenton!

The wonderful cast of Rent
Vanessa Agovida
This past weekend I performed as Joanne in the Mimes and Mummers' production of RENT. After a whirlwind rehearsal period of just five weeks, we finally got to present a show that had become very special to all of us in deeply personal ways. RENT is about love and survival, but most of all, it's about community--and our cast really became a family during this process. There's nothing like singing "Seasons of Love" with people you love. This was my fourth show with the Mimes, and maybe the most talented cast I've worked with at Fordham. Yesterday at the traditional Sunday cast dinner, I realized how grateful I am for the theatre community at Rose Hill and for the opportunity to work with fantastic professionals, like our director Brendan Stackhouse and music director Sean Forte.

One of many incredible speakers
Matt Calhoun
This weekend, along with my floormates in the Integrated Learning Community for Global Business (ILC-GB) in O'Hare Hall, I attended the European Conference at Harvard University. We left straight from campus on a special Ram Van and headed up to Boston where we stayed the night at the Revere Hotel, and attended the conference at the Kennedy School where we networked and shared ideas with members of the European Parliament (governing body of the EU) and professors from Harvard's Kennedy School.

Stranded in Pittsburgh in action
Brendan Burke
On Saturday night, I went to an improv comedy show put on by Fordham Experimental Theatre in the black box theatre in Collins Hall.  FET is entirely student run, and their improv troupe, Stranded in Pittsburgh, had a great show. The organization has different kinds of performances nearly every weekend, including improv comedy, standup comedy, spoken word performances, and plays and musicals that are written, directed, and produced by students. Plus, all FET events are free!

Cute little brunch spot
This weekend a few friends and I went to the Upper East Side for Saturday morning brunch. We took the 4 train right on Fordham road to 86th street and it was just a short walk to the restaurant. We went to Penrose, a great spot for brunch or dinner. The atmosphere was casual yet classy and the food did not disappoint. Afterwords we went thrift shopping before taking the train back to Fordham. It was a great Saturday out in the city!

Rent's amazing set
Amy Caffrey
This weekend, I got to see two different shows on campus. On Friday night, I went to the Blackbox Theater to see Fordham's Improv Comedy troupe, Stranded in Pittsburgh, perform.  The group is absolutely hilarious - my friends and I were in stitches for the entire show! Then, on Saturday night, I got to see Rent, which was performed by the Mimes and Mummers, Fordham's largest theater group. It was fantastic!

Delicious dinner

Victoria Cappucci
This weekend I took the Ram Van into the city and explored the Upper East Side with my roommates. We stumbled upon an organic Shake Shack-meets Five Guys burger restaurant that was sure to satisfy any appetite! Since it was all clear skies in Manhattan, we decided to take an early evening stroll through Central Park.

This past weekend I started tech week for Theatrical Outreach Program's (TOP's) production of The Laramie Project. This club does edited versions of full length shows and performs them for members of the community. For this show, we will be performing for LGBT youth. This is an incredibly talented group of students that I am so lucky to be a part of, and I can't wait to see how the show turns out next weekend!

Weekend Update

Linda Mule
This weekend, I had the ultimate lazy Saturday! Upon waking up to a still snowy campus, I took a 2 PM Metro North (Saturday and Sunday CityTicket is only $4!!!!) to Grand Central with my friends to check out to the most popular brunch spot in all of SoHo: Jack's Wife Freda. After only a few stops via the 6 Subway, we arrived at the cutest little cafe. We were seated among the hustle and bustle, and knew what we wanted immediately. I ordered the spicy shakshuka, an Israeli breakfast dish of baked eggs in a spicy sauce, and delicious lattes. We were served promptly and ate rapidly. After our late lunch, my friends and I made our way back on the Metro North for the quick trip back to Fordham where we watched movies and enjoyed the heat of the Residence Halls (who were busy preparing for the Super Bowl festivities for Sunday- wings anyone?).

It's been extremely cold in New York for the past few days so I spent this weekend mostly trying to stay warm in my dorm. On Friday and Saturday, my roommates and I had movie nights. On Sunday, I spent a lot of the day in the library reading and writing for some of my classes. There's a possibility of a snow day coming this week, but this weekend gave me the opportunity to stay ahead on my work.
Not a bad view

This weekend, my friends and I got together and watched the Super Bowl in one of my friend's dorm rooms. We had tons of snacks, and we also ended up ordering a pizza! Fordham always has a lot going on, but sometimes it's fun to stay inside on a cold night with some good friends. I had a great time watching the Super Bowl with my friends on Sunday, and I already cannot wait for next year's game!

Arthur Avenue: Not Your Average Cappuccino

Cute little puppy coffee!
Blue Mediterranean has amazing seafood dishes.
Academics are incredibly important here at Fordham, but when we want to unwind from class and catch up with friends, Arthur Avenue is the place to go.

I still remember my first time going to Bronx’s Little Italy after visiting Fordham during my junior year of high school. I had never been in such a neighborhood before, and it was fascinating seeing all of the quaint Italian restaurants and cafes.
Quick Tino's veggie

Umai Sushi's
specialty rolls.
I’ve made it my mission to visit every eatery on Arthur Avenue by the time I graduate. However, as I’m in the midst of my junior year, I’m slowly realizing that this might not be possible to accomplish in my remaining time at Fordham.

There are so many options in Bronx’s Little Italy that are essential to try out; some have been around for years, and now ones open all the time. Inevitably, I’ve found my personal favorites, and I suggest them to every visiting family and prospective student I meet on campus.

A common misconception about Little Italy is that it’s only good for dinner, but Fordham students will tell you otherwise. There are plenty of dinner options for sure, but it’s just as easy to go out and grab a breakfast sandwich after a long night of studying, indulge in a quick cup of coffee and pastry between classes, meet friends for frozen yogurt when the weather’s nice, or grab a delicious slice of pizza – just because!

My favorite: taco salad from Estrellita's!
Coffee and
croissant
breakfast
from De Lillo's.

Not only that, but the area is also particularly affordable – especially since many of its patrons are very budget-concerned college students – and offers all different types of cuisines, not solely Italian (even though the Italian food here is second to none…). The area exudes a very family-friendly vibe, and the school spirit lives on in the neighborhood, even more so after homecoming and big football games when the streets fill with crowds of Fordham families and proud alumni.

Mid-Week Breather

Wednesday is a light day academically for most Fordham students. Many of my friends and I don't have classes on Wednesdays, which is really nice because we get to enjoy a day off in the middle of our busy week!

This morning, my friend Eric and I hopped on the Fordham Ram Van to head down to Lincoln Center for Brunch. The brunch opportunities in NYC are endless, but we chose to go to Sarabeths! Sarabeth is known for her famous jams, but her brunches are just as delicious. The restaurant has an outdoor patio that looks out on Central Park, so we got to enjoy the lovely weather and some people watching.

Crab Cake Eggs Benedict!
There are so many sights to see around and in Central Park. You can almost count on being able to see street performers. Today, we got to see a great hip-hop group perform on our walk back to the Lincoln Center campus.

With midterms approaching, Eric and I both decided to keep our visit to the city shorter than usual, so we made our way back to Rose Hill. I will be spending the rest of my day studying for my Theology midterm tomorrow!

Weekend Update

Sara Power

One of the best things about Fordham is that if you're having a lazy weekend, like I did, there is so much to appreciate around you. I honestly did not feel much like getting out after a week of hard work, but the little things like waiting in line for one of the caf's amazing weekend omelettes and seeing Keating hit with the perfect rays of a setting sun, did more than enough to brighten the mood. Fordham has a lot of great and impressive things to offer, but it is in the quiet moments that you most appreciate Fordham for its simple wonder.

Beautiful view of Keating Hall

On Friday evening, my friends and I went to a free event on the rooftop garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the Upper East Side. We had an incredible view of Central Park, and we even got to see the sunset behind the skyline! On Saturday we went out to brunch for my friend's 21st birthday. The restaurant was located right by the Hudson River, so we enjoyed a delicious meal with a lovely view.

There are so many opportunities to see the NYC skyline!

Weekend Update!

My friends and me at the finish line.
Anna Romagnoli

This weekend I did a half-marathon in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens with friends from Fordham. It was a beautiful day and a fun way to spend the morning in another borough that's only a 20 minute cab ride from the Rose Hill campus.

Our mason jar parting gift.

This Sunday I attended the Club Leader Summit as a treasurer for Math Club. We attended different presentations including a keynote speech by Dean Dolan during dinner. At the end we even received cool mason jar containers for our hard work!

On Friday, I attended Fordham's annual  President's Ball, which was a great opportunity for my friends and me to get dressed up and have tons of fun! On Saturday, I completed a GoRuck Light event in honor of 9/11. GoRuck is a teamwork-oriented, fitness challenge designed to emulate the training Navy SEALs go through. On Sunday, I went to the Giants game at MetLife stadium. They lost to the Cardinals 25-14, but the game was still a lot of fun, and overall, the weekend was awesome!

Kirsten Simons

My weekend started off a little early, with a trip to Brooklyn on Thursday evening. I met a friend downtown, and we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge as soon as it got dark to see the lights in memory of 9/11. As we walked, we talked about our memories of the day, and reminisced about the past few years at Fordham. We then went to the Brooklyn Bridge Park to enjoy the incredible views of the skyline, where there were many other people doing the same. Later, we went to a little restaurant a block away for some incredible sushi.

After the excitement of Homecoming on Friday and Saturday, my friends Daniel, Maddie and I decided, in typical New Yorker fashion, it was time for a leisurely Sunday brunch. We headed to the East Village, where we found a great diner. Over a delicious meal, we talked about our weekends, and the work we were putting off to enjoy the great day. We then walked around the neighborhood a bit, as none of us are overly familiar with the area. It was a great relaxing end to a hectic and busy weekend.

Weekend Update!

The dining area in my dorm in Walsh!
Jessica Timko

This weekend was the first weekend that everyone was back on campus, and this is also the first year that my roommates and I are living in Walsh, an apartment style residence hall.  My roommates and I love to cook, so this Saturday we hosted a "Ramily" dinner for our friends who live down the hall from us.  We made a pasta dinner and enjoyed a fun night filled with good friends and good food.

The NYC skyline from the Hudson River!

Yuliana Veyberman

Even though I grew up in the city, it's still lots of fun to act like a tourist once in a while. My friends and I took advantage of the beautiful weather on Friday to take an evening cruise around the Hudson - we got the prettiest photos of the NYC skyline (and yes, we Instagrammed them all).

Collage of my Sunday activities!

On Sunday, my friends and I took the ram van into Lincoln Center to get Sunday brunch. We ate at Le Pain Quotidien, a restaurant and bakery right by Columbus Circle. It was pretty affordable and the food was great! After that, we walked over to New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. Although we did not go to a show, we were able to see all the crazy and unique outfits of people walking around, which was awesome!

The quaint inside of Freemans.

Emily Tanner

This weekend I went into the city to do some exploring, and of course get some yummy food! I explored SoHo and the surrounding areas and was SO happy to be back in the city. I went to this amazing restaurant hidden at the end of an alley called Freemans. It was delicious, I got the 5 cheese macaroni! There's nothing like a Saturday spent in the city with the people you love, finding new and interesting places in areas you'd never expect!
