Weekend Update

Cerisse Gabion
On Friday after all of my classes were done, I headed into the city to shop around for dresses for the Under the Tent dance, one of the main events of Spring Weekend that is coming up. After browsing around Chelsea, the Flatiron District, and Union Square for a bit, I finally found a jumpsuit that I thought suited the "Illusionists" theme of the dance, for a great price as well! Saturday was also a beautiful day, which I spent half of in the library preparing for finals and the other half enjoying Chipotle on our beautiful Eddie's Parade. I then concluded my weekend by performing in a voice recital in the University Church. As a music minor, I receive credit for my voice lessons and I finally got to experience a culmination of a semester's long work of these musical pieces from my colleagues.

This weekend a few of my friends from Fordham and I decided to have an adventurous Sunday afternoon by trying an aerial yoga class (for only $10!). We had no idea what to expect going into it, but we all wound up leaving refreshed & excited about going back for another class!

This weekend was a big one for the Rose Hill theatre community! I went to see Fordham Experimental Theatre's Sketch Comedy and Standup joint show. They completely packed the Black Box, and it was a great show! I also went to see the Mimes and Mummers' production of Inherit the Wind. This show is based on the 1925 Scopes trial about freedom of thought and evolution in schools. This show was also wonderful, and I really enjoyed it!

Weekend Update

One big happy family

Kaitlyn McWha

This weekend my entire family came to visit me at Fordham to celebrate my brother's birthday. My grandparents, aunt, uncles, and cousins came all the way from Massachusetts to see me at college! After a tour of the campus, we went to Michelangelo's on Arthur Avenue for my brother's birthday dinner. My family loves Fordham, and I was so happy to see all of them!

This Saturday I went into Manhattan to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime on Broadway with my family, and it was amazing. Despite having to brave the rainy weather in the morning, it cleared up by the time we got out of the show, allowing us to walk around and enjoy the city afterwards!

What a great environment to find my inner peace!
In a city where many think that nothing is free, you would be surprised when I tell you that I took and amazing yoga class, in a gorgeous studio in the East Village. Yoga To The People is a yoga studio with only one rule- to find your inner peace. The donation-based studio has multiple locations throughout the city and is open to all levels. I went with a couple of friends over the weekend and was warmly greeted by staff and other yoga students alike. What I loved about this studio was that although it is donation based, they do not pressure you into feeling as though you must give a donation, and they are very appreciative of whatever you can give. I would go back without a doubt; I especially want to try the hot yoga class in Chelsea!

My weekend was spent catching up on some very much needed rest and relaxation on Martyr's lawn and visiting with my family. Being from a close 20 minutes away in Westchester, I feel I have the best of both worlds. While at school, I have a strong sense of independence dorming and being with my friends. However, my family is a short car ride away when I need them...or when I need my dog!

The fun began on Friday night this past weekend when the Fordham football team hosted Lafayette, the defending Patriot League champions, for a game under the lights at Jack Coffey Field at Rose Hill.  The game began competitive, but the Rams really hit their stride in the second quarter and led 31-10 at the half.  Fordham went on to win 42-18, improving to 5-1 on the season!  Also, receiver Tebucky Jones Jr. was featured on the SportsCenter Top 10 with the #1 play of the night.

Not Gilty

Fordham is my school. New York is my campus. We are incessantly reminded of the opportunities our school’s location provides for us. But for many students, our ambitions often out stretch our bank accounts. Between financing the obvious basic college necessities, like books and supplies, and the other less obvious (but equally essential) oddities, ranging from command hooks to toilet paper, the budget of a college student leaves little room for excess expenditure. Decidedly, I’d love to spend a Sunday morning enjoying a post-yoga brunch in the East Village, but a swift check of my TD bank app crushes my hopes of satisfying this New York lifestyle…but does it have to?

Online services like Groupon, Gilt City, and Living Social prove that having a glimpse into a Carrie Bradshaw-esque lifestyle is not all that unattainable. These digital services provide members with discounted gift certificates for local businesses including restaurants, boutiques and fitness studios. The online accounts require no cost and prove user (and budget) friendly. For members, services usually ranging anywhere from 20-90% off the original price.

Five classes at Bikram Harold Square cost me $49, over 50% off the price for other customers

With easily accessible apps and daily email threads, these online services not only provide student-friendly prices but also can serve as inspiration for a date-night or night out with friends. So if you’ve been feeling a little gilty about you’re spending already this year but still crave the pricey New York City air...check out these websites and their great finds!

The McGinley Fitness Center

One of my favorite places to be on campus is in Fordham's new state-of-the-art McGinley Fitness Center.  The gym opened just last October and contains over 1,800 square feet of cardio space equipped with elliptical machines, stationary bikes, and treadmills. Each machine even has its own television which I like to watch the news in the morning on my morning treadmill run or elliptical stride. Additionally, there are strength machines along the perimeter of the gym and a separate heavier weight room to really pump some iron. The facility also houses two group exercise studios: a 1,100 square foot main studio and a spin studio for weekly group exercise classes.

The Spin Room (Minus the Spinners)

Exercise classes are a great way to de-stress and take an hour break from schoolwork. And the best part is that all classes are free for all full time Fordham students! A schedule is made up each semester consisting of a variety of Zumba, yoga, spin, and strength classes offered Monday through Friday. No signups are necessary and students can pop in to any class convenient for them. My favorite classes are the spinning classes, which consist of an hour of biking and encouragement from the instructor while jamming out to an upbeat playlist. Some instructors are certified students, and others are certified trainers. With finals coming up shortly, I will definitely be attending a least a couple of spin and yoga classes to get my mind and body focused for the hours of studying to come!
