Weekend Update

Cerisse Gabion
On Friday after all of my classes were done, I headed into the city to shop around for dresses for the Under the Tent dance, one of the main events of Spring Weekend that is coming up. After browsing around Chelsea, the Flatiron District, and Union Square for a bit, I finally found a jumpsuit that I thought suited the "Illusionists" theme of the dance, for a great price as well! Saturday was also a beautiful day, which I spent half of in the library preparing for finals and the other half enjoying Chipotle on our beautiful Eddie's Parade. I then concluded my weekend by performing in a voice recital in the University Church. As a music minor, I receive credit for my voice lessons and I finally got to experience a culmination of a semester's long work of these musical pieces from my colleagues.

This weekend a few of my friends from Fordham and I decided to have an adventurous Sunday afternoon by trying an aerial yoga class (for only $10!). We had no idea what to expect going into it, but we all wound up leaving refreshed & excited about going back for another class!

This weekend was a big one for the Rose Hill theatre community! I went to see Fordham Experimental Theatre's Sketch Comedy and Standup joint show. They completely packed the Black Box, and it was a great show! I also went to see the Mimes and Mummers' production of Inherit the Wind. This show is based on the 1925 Scopes trial about freedom of thought and evolution in schools. This show was also wonderful, and I really enjoyed it!

Weekend Update

Fordham has a lot to offer, but some of its most interesting affiliations are outside of campus. This weekend, I went to an event organized through the Concourse Group, a micro finance organization located just outside of Fordham's campus. I currently work for the Concourse Group as a micro finance consultant to small Bronx business owners. This Sunday, I went to a business called Scenyc in the Bronx with my colleagues in order to collaborate with entrepreneurs and to work on a business plan for one of our current clients. Scenyc is an awesome and innovative business incubator, and I'm so excited to continue working there and in Fordham's business incubator!

This past week it has been quite busy at Fordham! One of the exciting points for the end of semester blues however was a part of this week- class selection! I look at this time of year as a way to plan out all of the exciting classes that I can take here at Fordham. Classes are added all the time- an English class pertaining directly to my major was added just this week! Another really awesome end of semester event coming up is Spring Weekend! Spring Weekend is the weekend before finals and is a jam packed (literally, there's a DJ and a band) with fun events from Friday night until Sunday night! It will not be long until we find out who will be our musical guests this year, but we know it will be amazing!

This weekend, I had an incredibly busy weekend. Friday and Saturday night, Expressions Dance Alliance (the dance club I am in) had their spring semester showcase. The show went about an hour and a half, and featured The Satin Dolls, Fordham's incredible women's a cappella group. Overall, it was a huge success and all of our hard work over the semester really paid off! On Sunday, my Global Outreach team had its retreat. Global Outreach is a really popular program at Fordham for cultural immersion and service, and my team's project is traveling to Bethel, Alaska. It was a really great bonding opportunity for my service project community, and I cannot wait to go to Alaska with them!

On Saturday, my friends and I went to Ram's Got Talent, a Fordham talent show sponsored by the Commuter Students Association that was held as part of Commuter Week. The talents varied from beatboxing to singing, and everyone who competed was extremely talented. It was really fun to watch and was a great way to spend a Saturday evening!

Weekend Update

This past weekend was the end of our spring break at Fordham. I spent this last week in West Palm Beach, FL with my two roommates. It was great to relax, enjoy the warm weather and spend time at the beach. Now that we are back, we are excited to enjoy spring and the rest of our last semester at Fordham!

Over Spring Break, I went on a Gabelli School of Business Study Tour to Santiago, Chile! In addition to exploring the city, we attended lectures at a Chilean Jesuit University and visited several companies. Since the Chilean economy is largely connected to its copper export, one of our visits was to Codelco's El Teniente Copper Mine, which is the largest copper mine in the world. It was quite the experience to go into a copper mine and see how the whole mining process works from start to finish. After the cold winter at Fordham, it felt so great to spend a week in the sun and the heat!

While I was sad to see Spring Break end I was happy to get back to Fordham to see my friends. Before my parents headed back home after dropping me off at school we stopped at Palumbo Bakery on Arthur Avenue for delicious pastries!
We love all the colorful treats

Weekend Update Super Post

Check out the fun Fordham students have been having for the past couple weekends!
Some new friends from the retreat

This weekend I went on my first Fordham Retreat, Emmaus 114. The retreat took place at Fordham’s amazing retreat house in Goshen. I had an amazing weekend full of prayer, personal reflection, and lots of fun! This was one of my favorite Fordham experiences so far. I made so many new friends who I can’t wait to hang out with outside of the retreat. It was the perfect way to recharge before midterms.

This weekend I also went on the Emmaus 114 retreat. We stayed at Fordham’s own beautiful retreat house in Goshen, NY. There are various retreats available for students throughout the year, each with a slightly different focus.  It was a very fulfilling experience, and I definitely recommend signing up for one!

The cold weather couldn't stop me from heading into Manhattan this weekend for a delicious dinner at Rolf's, a German restaurant known for its awesome food and Christmas decorations (that stay up all winter)!

My delicious Cuban dinner

This past weekend, I went into Manhattan and had dinner at Havana Central, a Cuban restaurant in Midtown. After dinner, I stumbled upon a really good cookie place called Schmackary's. On the menu were 45 different types of cookies. The one I got was chocolate chip with a hint of sea salt.

This weekend was a great opportunity for me to hang out with friends from both on campus and off! I took the Ram Van downtown and went to see the musical If/Then with a friend and also met up with a friend from Australia at the theatre who gave me this really cool boomerang!

I went to see the musical Wicked on Broadway with my roommates. Out of the five of us, only three of us had seen it before so it was a really exciting trip. We began the evening by going out to dinner at Enzo's, one of our favorite restaurants on Arthur Avenue. After that we grabbed some dessert at Palombo and sprinted to catch the next Metro North Train to Grand Central. After quickly navigating through the city we made it just in time for the show to begin. Although I have already seen Wicked once before, it was an amazing performance. After the show, we decided to take the subway home to save some money and came back to Fordham. One of my favorite aspects of attending Fordham is how easy it is to explore and experience Manhattan. There's no better feeling than escaping the Bronx for a little while and enjoying the endless opportunities that lie just 20 minutes away.

Weekend Update

Heather Richards
This past weekend I took a bus to Washington DC to visit my family. They flew in from Chicago to see the Andrew Wyeth art exhibit at The National Gallery of Art. We spent the weekend exploring a couple of museums, eating food, and hanging out together at the house. I really enjoyed the opportunity to see my family, sleep in, read, and explore DC!

This weekend I focused most of my time on finishing school work before Thanksgiving break. It was very relaxing to stay on campus with the beautiful fall scenery and take my time with my work after a busy week. I was able to finish my work and catch up on my sleep, which was much needed, so it was quite an enjoyable weekend!
I love exploring our beautiful campus

This weekend, I met up with some friends from high school. We all go to different colleges in NYC, so we like to meet up every so often. This weekend, we went to Ellen's Stardust Diner. At Ellen's, the waiters and waitresses are aspiring actors and actresses trying to get onto Broadway, so they sing while you eat. It was a ton of fun, and the food was great!

Weekend Update

The beautiful Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge Park
Amy Caffrey

After a long week of midterms, some friends and I decided to relax by heading downtown and taking a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, one of our favorite things to do! We hung out in the Brooklyn Bridge Park on the Brooklyn side of the bridge, and stayed long enough to see the beautiful view of the city skyline at night across the water.

Foster the People at the United Palace Theatre

Kicked off the weekend Friday night by going to see Foster The People preform at the United Palace Theater in Washington Heights, one of the most beautiful venues I've ever been to. The next day was spent with friends shopping and dining in Chelsea and SoHo, two of the coolest neighborhoods in Lower Manhattan. Sunday was dedicated to wrapping up schoolwork and studying of course, but not too bad for a weekend that flew by!

With fall in full bloom here at Fordham, I decided to unwind this Sunday for a walk through the Botanical Gardens. The gardens are always a great way to de-stress before and after midterms, which we could all use during this time of year! And the best part is that it's free for Fordham students. Go rams!

The choir gathers for one last rehearsal
Kate Callahan

This Sunday, the Fordham University and Women’s Choirs presented their annual fall concert. These groups, which are made up of students from both the Lincoln Center and Rose Hill campuses, come together a few times a year to perform for the Fordham community. Both choirs put on impressive shows and are looking forward to the Festival of Lessons and Carols, one of Fordham’s most exciting holiday traditions!

Weekend Update

One big happy family

Kaitlyn McWha

This weekend my entire family came to visit me at Fordham to celebrate my brother's birthday. My grandparents, aunt, uncles, and cousins came all the way from Massachusetts to see me at college! After a tour of the campus, we went to Michelangelo's on Arthur Avenue for my brother's birthday dinner. My family loves Fordham, and I was so happy to see all of them!

This Saturday I went into Manhattan to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime on Broadway with my family, and it was amazing. Despite having to brave the rainy weather in the morning, it cleared up by the time we got out of the show, allowing us to walk around and enjoy the city afterwards!

What a great environment to find my inner peace!
In a city where many think that nothing is free, you would be surprised when I tell you that I took and amazing yoga class, in a gorgeous studio in the East Village. Yoga To The People is a yoga studio with only one rule- to find your inner peace. The donation-based studio has multiple locations throughout the city and is open to all levels. I went with a couple of friends over the weekend and was warmly greeted by staff and other yoga students alike. What I loved about this studio was that although it is donation based, they do not pressure you into feeling as though you must give a donation, and they are very appreciative of whatever you can give. I would go back without a doubt; I especially want to try the hot yoga class in Chelsea!

My weekend was spent catching up on some very much needed rest and relaxation on Martyr's lawn and visiting with my family. Being from a close 20 minutes away in Westchester, I feel I have the best of both worlds. While at school, I have a strong sense of independence dorming and being with my friends. However, my family is a short car ride away when I need them...or when I need my dog!

The fun began on Friday night this past weekend when the Fordham football team hosted Lafayette, the defending Patriot League champions, for a game under the lights at Jack Coffey Field at Rose Hill.  The game began competitive, but the Rams really hit their stride in the second quarter and led 31-10 at the half.  Fordham went on to win 42-18, improving to 5-1 on the season!  Also, receiver Tebucky Jones Jr. was featured on the SportsCenter Top 10 with the #1 play of the night.

Fordham Athletics: From Club to Intramurals

If you’re like me, then you’re of a high population of students who have been athletic their whole lives but not quite at the college level. I had always heard about club and intramural sports but at first thought that they wouldn’t be as much fun as my previous varsity experience. Boy was I wrong! I am a proud member of the women’s Rugby team and multiple intramural sports teams such as soccer and basketball.

My rugby team in Rhode Island at a tournament
The women’s rugby team is a one of the many club sports available here at Fordham. Because we are a club team, we get a small amount of funding from Fordham and have access to their facilities such as the football field for practice twice a week and ram vans for travel. Not only has Rugby fueled my need to be active and healthy, but I have also made a fantastic new group of friends.

I also thoroughly enjoy playing with my intramural team each week because they are much needed outlets during our busy weeks. Games go on every day of the week between 7-11 p.m. I feel as though they are the perfect balance between intensity and fun. The people on the field take the game seriously because we all want that t-shirt at the and, of course, bragging rights! On the other hand, both teams laugh a lot and congratulate each other on a job well done at the end of every game regardless of the outcome. One of my favorite characteristics of Fordham students is our ability to always try our best but keep in mind they we are one big happy Fordham ramily!

Sweet shirts and bragging rights after winning the intramural championship
So whether you’re someone who enjoys staying active in a fun and competitive environment, or someone who will be MVP, there are plenty of outlets. Teams are always excited about new recruits and there are plenty of skill levels for you to choose from and get involved.
